Academy of Environmental Stewardship

2014/15 FIELD TRIP FEES AND SCHEDULE

Cost is $15 per student. Teachers and parents are free. All fees are to be paid one week prior to your field trip.

 

THE PROGRAMS

9/22/14 – 11/21/14: The Luiseños of Agua Hedionda

  • Traditional Foods

  • Activities and the Environment

  • Reviving the Luiseño Language

  • Weaving

  • Rock Art

  • Edu-tainer

Field Trip 1 | Luiseños of Agua Hedionda: Ancient Ways Still Alive
Students rotate through the following 5 stations:
1. Traditional Foods highlights the hunting and gathering methods of the Luiseño people. Students watch a rabbit stick demo, grind on a matate using a mano stone, and get to try chia seed.
2. Activities and the Environment teaches students about how nature was used to make games for Luiseño children. Students will play a dice and math game using elderberry sticks.

3. Reviving the Luiseño Language teaches students Luiseño words.
4. Weaving shows students the many useful items Luiseño women made with basket weaving. Students can make a cordage weave with raffia.

5. Rock Art is an important lesson in protecting nature and the cultural items that can be found in nature.
Students learn that Luiseño people used symbols as written communication before an alphabet or number
system. They see examples of rock art that was destroyed by graffiti. Students make their own rock art on sandstone. In addition to their small groups, students have a whole-group “edu-tainer,” a local Native American storyteller.
 

12/1/14 – 1/30/15: The Living Lagoon

Field Trip 2 | The Living Lagoon

Students rotate through the following 5 stations:
1. Branding at the Rancho teaches students the importance of cattle and how it was marked. Students use an electric brand to mark their own piece of leather with the Agua Hedionda brand.
2. The Vaquero’s Tooling shows the many skills a vaquero needed during these early days in Carlsbad as well as the tooling (leather artwork) he did to pass the quiet times. Students tool their branded leather strip.
3. Archaeological Observations and Inferences allows students to become archaeologists and excavate artifacts while observing and making inferences about what that object could have been used for in the early days of Carlsbad.
4. Native Plants Hike takes the students down the Discovery Center trail, highlighting native plants that grow in this special ecosystem.
5. Environmental Field Journaling gives students an opportunity to sharpen their observational skills when
studying native trees and recording questions and connections in their field journal. In addition to their small groups, students have a whole-group “edu-tainer,” a local naturalist who teaches students important factors about the nature that’s living and growing all around.

 

2/9/15 – 4/3/15: Adaptations: Live and Learn

  • Bird Beak Buffet

Field Trip 3 | Adaptations: Live and Learn
Students rotate through the following 5 stations:
1. Bird Beak Buffet highlights the different bird beak shapes and, and students learn how that information helps us understand the food that’s best fit for each bird.
2. The Great Migration Challenge is a fun, interactive game students play on part of our Discovery Trail. Pairs of students assume the role of a migrating bird and learn the challenges and some benefits migrating birds experience on their journey.
3. Intertidal Animal Adaptations using our aquariums and touch tank to teach students about the physical and behavioral adaptations these animals need to survive the intertidal environment.
4. Native Plant Hike take the students down our Discovery Center trail while teaching them how these native plants in this ecosystem adapt to be drought-resistant.
5. Non-Native Animal Sketch introduces our beloved bearded dragon, Lincoln. Students learn about her physical and behavioral adaptations that help her survive in the deserts of Australia while sketching her physical characteristics. In addition to their small groups, students have a whole-group “edu-tainer” who highlights live animals and their various adaptations.

 

4/13/15 – 6/5/15: Watershed, Wetland, and Wildlife

  • Who Polluted the Lagoon?

  • Oil Spill Rescue and Rehabilitation

  • Edu-tainer

Field Trip 4 | Watershed, Wetland, and Wildlife at Agua Hedionda
Students rotate through the following 5 stations:
1. Who Polluted the Lagoon? shows students how quickly the lagoon becomes polluted by human impact and how we can prevent pollution.

2. Trouble in the Tide shows students the devastating effects Caulerpa taxifolia had in these waters at one time.
3. Oil Spill Rescue and Rehabilitation takes pollution to a global level when students learn about wide-spread oil pollution and how it affects ocean wildlife. Students will simulate rescuing and rehabilitating a “bird” from an oil spill.
4. Listen to the Bugs teaches students that the insects that call the lagoon home can tell us a lot about the health of this special ecosystem.
5. Estuary Food Web is a fun, interactive game when students assume the role of a hunting coyote on the prowl for enough prey. Students learn how they are affected when the balance in the ecosystem shifts and it becomes difficult to find food. In addition to their small groups, students have a whole-group “edu-tainer” who highlights the importance of a healthy watershed. 

 

Pre-K and Kindergarten program
* An educator can join your group and offer a 90-minute educational lesson and activity. Troops of 10+ students are $5.00 per student. Classes smaller than 10 (minimum of 6) are $8.50 per student.
* Add an age-appropriate craft that supports the learning for $2-$3 per student.

 

Academy Teachers

Cancellation Policy

Cost is $15 per student. Teachers and parent volunteers are free. All fees are to be paid one week prior to your field trip. If   you need to cancel your program for any reason, please email samantha@aguahedionda.org so that we have it in writing.  We will respond via email that we received your cancellation. If you do not receive a response to your email, please call 760 804 1969 and speak with Samantha or Lisa. If cancellations occur at least two weeks before the program, no fees apply. If cancellations occur within two weeks before the date of the program, 50% of the entire trip scheduled will be charged. This applies to student absences.  Our program runs rain or shine; no need for cancellation due to inclement weather.

Boy Scouts & Girls Scouts

We are excited about the prospect of collaborating with Girl Scout and Boy Scout  troop leaders to develop a program that
will help you achieve your goals.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery strives to make meaningful connections between children and their environment.
Every connection we make has the potential to change the world!

We are available to host your meeting during after-school or evening hours by appointment.
There are many areas at the Agua Hedionda Discovery Center with different subjects to focus on.

 

  • Native American Culture—learn about native life on the lagoon. Activities could include acorn grinding, games/music,hunting basics, weaving, or native plants.

  • The Rancho Experience—learn about old time ranch life and leather craft tooling.

  • Reptile City—learn about lizards, snakes, and amphibians that live at the Discovery Center

  • Birds—observe the Cliff Swallows that nest on our eaves in spring and summer

  • Touch pool and Aquariums—learn about invertebrates in our tide pools, our aquarium system, aquaculture, or theanimals that live in the shells we find on the beach

  • Watersheds and Wetlands—use our hands-on models to explore the impact of land development and pollutionour environment

  • Paleontology—learn about ancient animal bones found locally and methods used to map a dig site as well as preservetheir finds

  • Bees—observe or demonstration bee hive, learn the many rolls of a worker bee in a hive, or dissect a flower to learnabout pollination 

 

Pricing

There are several options available, depending on your interests:

* A self-guided tour is free, but a donation is always welcome.

* An educator can join your group and offer a 90-minute educational lesson and activity. Troops of 10+ scouts are $5.00 per scout. Troops smaller than 10 (minimum of 6) are $8.50 per scout.

* Badges are $2.00 each.

* Add an age-appropriate craft that supports the learning for $2-$3 per scout.

* Spend the night for an additional $85 building use fee (DVD player, full kitchen, patio, etc). This is available 5pm-9am.
